Sunday May 4, 2008 - Jon Odegaard, playing out of the Queenston Golf Club, made his debut on the Nevada Bob’s Men’s Tour a memorable one by winning his 1st event. The Norwegian sensation put together 9s of 38-36-75 over the very windy, picturesque Peninsula Lakes Golf Club to win by one over 3 other longtime Tour members.
Tied for 2nd is smooth-swinging Tim McGlynn from Lookout Point, Tony Ravenda of Thundering Waters, & defending Tour champion Jim Briggs, GAO member. Four players were tied at 76, lead by another Tour rookie, Gord Dunn from Twenty Valley, GAO members Bob Goss and Bryan Kolbuc and Dunnville’s own Ken Robertson. Tied for 9th are Twenty Valley’s Rick Henderson & long ball hitting Frank Mortensen from Lookout Point. Rounding out the top 15 are 5 players tied at 78 led by Pelham Hills’ Ken Childs, Bridgewater’s Gord Henderson, Lookout Point's Marcel Mariage, Tour rookie Stew McEachern from Loch Ness Links, and Junior Tour sensation from 2007 Kenny Molkoski from Sparrow Lakes.
Not only did the 2-3 club wind straight out of the west cause havoc for the players all day but some extremely challenging pin placements also added to the degree of difficulty for the opening event.
The highlight of the day was by Thundering Waters’ Tony Ravenda, back on the Tour after a year’s absence, with a Hole-in-One on the 196 yard par 3 6th hole. Hitting a 6 iron, it was Tony’s first Hole-in-One of his golfing career. Congratulations Tony!
There were six skins on the day, each worth $90. Winners are Todd Turonski #2 (birdie), Tim McGlynn #5 (birdie), Tony Ravenda #6 (ace), Mark Bolton #13 (birdie), Barry Carr #14 (birdie) & Marcel Mariage #16 (eagle). Unfortunately, the two Closest to the Pins were overlooked therefore they will be doubled up at Grand Niagara.
In the newly created ‘Niagara Golf Report’ rookie of the year race, Jon Odegaard jumps out front ahead of Gord Dunn, followed by Kenny Molkoski & Stew McEachern. In the Senior division, for players 50 & older, Tony Ravenda & Jim Briggs are tied for 1st, Bob Goss is 3rd, & Frank Mortensen is in 4th place.
The 2008 Tour season began on a very sad note due to the loss of two long-time members. 2004 Tour Overall Champion Jim McNeil of Twenty Valley and Tour favourite Grant MacMillan of Rolling Meadows both passed away recently. Both left us far too early and will be dearly missed by all. The Tour Committee will be working with both golf clubs and each player’s family regarding a dedication in their memory. The Tour players’ thoughts and prayers go out to Jim & Grant’s families and loved ones..
