Sunday July 19, 2009 - Sawmill's Kyle Smith bounced back from a rough outing at St. Catharines G&CC in style, shooting a solid three over par round of 75 at Twenty Valley Golf and Country Club to win the fourth event on the 2009 Nevada Bob's Men's Tour schedule.
Smith, shown below receiving congratulations from Bob Allan of Nevada Bob's, put together nines of 36 and 39 and was quite steady all day, making two birdies, eleven pars and five bogeys to win the event by a single shot over four other players.

The Tour rookie won for the second time already this year after taking down the first event at Peninsula Lakes and was also the winner of the Fall Qualifying tournament last September.
Finishing in a tie for second were Fox Run's Jim Briggs (39-37), Mike Garcia from Queenston GC (39-37), Bill Lipsett from the host course Twenty Valley (37-39) and Tony Ravenda from Thundering Waters (36-40). The second place finishes were personal bests for both Garcia, a player in his second year on Tour and for veteran Lipsett, who has been on the Tour since its inception in 2001.
Rounding out the top ten were a quartet of players from Lookout Point, as Ryan Gidney (35-42), Paul Lord (38-39), Ian Penney (39-38) and Joe Spiler (35-42) all notched fine rounds of 77. Joining them in a tie for sixth were former Tour event winners Bob Goss from Port Colborne G&CC (38-39) and Phil Stouffer from Twenty Valley (39-38).
Surprisingly enough, there were no eagles on the day for the first time all season on the Tour. With scoring pretty low overall, that meant a lot of birdies and the result was only one skin on the day. Jim Briggs made a birdie 2 at the difficult par three 16th hole and takes home a whopping $540.00 for his efforts! His tee shot on the hole, hit to 13' 6", also won him the Closest to the Hole prize from his own company, Briggsy's Sportswear and Promotions. The other Closest to the Hole award goes to Beechwood's own John Rodwell, who knocked his tee shot on the ninth hole stiff to 2' 9" to win the gift certificate from 13th Mountain Street Bistro. Paul Lord won the 50/50 draw and takes home $95.00.
With his second win of the season, Smith moves back into the overall lead for the Jim McNeil Trophy, awarded to the player with the most points at the end of the season. His 486.5 points give him a commanding lead over Jim Briggs, while the points leader coming into the event, two-time 2009 winner Frank Mortensen from Lookout Point, drops to third place. Tony Ravenda follows closely behind in fourth, only one point below Mortensen while young star Ryan Gidney moves up to fifth position in the overall standings after another solid finish at Twenty Valley.
Smith maintains his large lead in the Niagara Golf Report Rookie of the Year race, with Bradley Cassidy from Rolling Meadows in second, Brad Butler from St. Catharines in third, Royal Niagara's Jesse Bedard in fourth and Adam Briggs from Fox Run in fifth. Jim Briggs takes over the lead in the Senior of the Year standings and is followed by Frank Mortensen in second, Tony Ravenda in third, Bob Goss in fourth and Joe Spiler in fifth.
The Tour committee would like to thank Twenty Valley's Randy Taylor and former Tour player Caleb Ellis for their help and support during the event. The course was in solid shape and continues to be a favourite destination for the Tour committee. We look forward to coming back in the near future.
The fifth event on the Nevada Bob's Men's Tour takes place on Sunday August 16th at LochNess Links in Welland. Tee times will be made available on or before August 7th.
